Pi Recordings, founded in 2001, was formed so that we could release two new CDs by Henry Threadgill. There were no plans past that, but if we continued we only wanted to work with composers performing their own music. We saw a need to document American composers with unique and defining voices. Since then we have been fortunate to work with some of the most prolific and influential artists, such as Roscoe Mitchell, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Wadada Leo Smith and Anthony Braxton. We also considered it essential to support the younger voices. It seemed natural to look to the musicians performing, recording and learning from the artists already on the label. Artists like Vijay Iyer, Elliot Humberto Kavee, Liberty Ellman and Rudresh Mahanthappa have since released CDs on Pi Recordings documenting their growth as composers. We are pleased by the public's reception of all of our recordings. We hope to continue our work with people whom we consider living masters, while following the voice of a new generation. As we look at the catalog thus far we marvel at its depth and maturity. We hope that you will continue to support the label and our artists as we continue to develop.
It seems to me that as arbitrary as the definition of good and bad has become in today's market-driven world, it is time for history to be chronicled as accurately as possible, so that in the future we can look back and see what has come from where and perhaps better understand our choices. We live in a time when self-definition is the central, yet most conflicted, process pushed and pulled by marketed "reality". More than ever today, the only real refuge is empirical experience. With that in mind, this is the right moment to document what has been overlooked, a process that in and of itself wreaks a certain havoc.
At the same time, I am also trying to establish what I feel is true about our lives at this time. Namely, that the individual and the individual voice, no matter how disparate, is greater than the consensus. This has lead me to look and listen to material that is fomenting change, and this an important clue to who we are or may become. Pi Recordings will document those statements that are laying the groundwork for a greater understanding of material and process, synthesis and codification.
